What does it do?

  • Polyglotte can accommodate 4 languages (limited by screen space).  Viewers logged into the presentation can see additional languages on a personal device.
  • Technical requirements are minimal: a projector or TV monitor, maybe a technician to work the laptop, and Internet access. (slides are shown from dashboard.polyglotte.am)
  • No need for translator booth or special headphones.
  • Available in breakout sessions.
  • Cost is minimal.
  • "Demo" mode allows multilingual discussion on the spot. (This works from the home page and anyone can use it.)
  • Slide preparation can use drag & drop, voice-to-text (typing also works!) and images can be added
  • Text-to-voice is available.  We include Armenian TTV, which Google doesn't offer.
  • Back-translation to the source language allows a rating of translation quality.
  • Text bar at the bottom allows entry of audience questions or any announcements.

 

How does Polyglotte work?

Polyglotte.am is a convenient way to translate one language into multiple other languages at the same time.

It's really pretty simple. The translation command can be added to an online google spreadsheet, specifying the source and translated languages in each cell.  The spreadsheet can be set up quickly, in an hour. The purpose of polyglotte.am is to let you do this within a few seconds.

Navigate to polyglot.am select "demo" mode. You can select your own source language and up to three translated languages. The number of translated languages is limited by screen size.  Choose the drop-down to choose your desired languages. For fun, translate English into French, Armenian and Spanish.

It is up to you how you enter the source language. You can type quickly, cut and paste, drag and drop, or use a voice to text program.

Polyglotte.am uses check GPT to back-Translate and compare the back translation to the original Source language. This is a simple way to tell whether there was a major error in Translation.

 

What can I do with polyglotte? 
1. International meetings
Polyglotte was intended for international meetings where attendees may not be familiar with the spoken language. We have frequent international medical meetings in Armenia for example, and one might guess that not everyone is fluent in either English or Armenian, the official languages of these conferences. 
Even someone who is partially familiar with a language can easily lose track of the discussion if there is a word or sentence that they don't understand. Having a "slideshow" listing the important points of the discussion in multiple languages can keep everyone up to speed with the discussion. 
A recent Armenian medical Congress held in Madrid used a program that translated audio into multiple languages, transcribing it word for word. This actually produced too much information because of the way people speak. Limiting the translation to the important points facilitates understanding.

 

2. Learning new languages

There are two strategies to learning multiple languages. One is to learn an entire language, once that's done, learn another language. A second strategy is to learn how to say critical sentences in multiple languages at once. Examples might be, "it is nice to meet you", "how much does this cost?", or "where is the restroom?"

Someone traveling to Europe might want to learn how to say important phrases in Spanish and Italian. Since the two languages have some similarities, showing the translations together on a single screen can make it easier to learn.

 

3. Rapid communication 


There may be occasions when communication in multiple languages is needed immediately. One example is in emergency situations when communication about traffic, emergency services or other matters is needed. After the devastating fire in Maui, communication was needed in English, Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Tagalog and Ilocano. In the San Francisco Bay Area, common languages include Russian, Farsi, Hindi, Vietnamese, Spanish and many others.

 4. other international communications

One obvious application is on airlines where they may want to make announcements (no smoking in the lavatory, turbulence ahead, welcome to Yerevan) in multiple languages.  With 100+ languages to choose from, the plane can fly virtually anywhere we want!

 

How does conference mode differ from demo mode?

Demo mode can be set up in a few seconds by anyone for an impromptu translation session.  Simply navigate to polyglotte.am, choose Demo mode, select your languages and start meeting!

Conference mode requires some preparation. It allows preparation of slides in the native speakers' language and translation to other languages as desired. It is operated from a different website, dashboard.polyglotte.am although the conference attendees can view the translation on their personal devices by logging into polyglotte.am entering a meeting code which directs them to the correct lecture.
