(How to survive an online meeting)
Law #1 : most online formats allow for one person to speak at a time.
- If two people talk at same time, we can't hear either one.
- Wait for the person speaking to finish speaking
- the person speaking should not hesitate to finish speaking
- The chat function is really cool. If you talk too much, others will use it to talk with each other - about how you talk so long.
Law #2: your audience can generally handle one discussion at a time
- don't string together multiple unrelated thoughts
- avoid the use of conjunctions, especially "and" and "so" since they often lead to an unrelated thought
- allow time for discussion before moving onto the next unrelated (or related) thought.
Law #3 if other people are still on the zoom call, it's because they have something to say
Law #4: most of what you say can, and should, be said in fewer than 10 seconds.
- Refer to laws 1, 2 and 3
- minimize time spent thanking the speakers, moderators or anyone else
- Try not to restate the obvious. We all know how important and monumental today's conference is.
