(How to survive an online meeting)

Law #1 :  most online formats allow for one person to speak at a time.

  • If two people talk at same time, we can't hear either one.
  • Wait for the person speaking to finish speaking
  • the person speaking should not hesitate to finish speaking
  • The chat function is really cool.  If you talk too much, others will use it to talk with each other -  about how you talk so long.

Law #2: your audience can generally handle one discussion at a time

  • don't string together multiple unrelated thoughts
  • avoid the use of conjunctions, especially "and" and "so" since they often lead to an unrelated thought
  • allow time for discussion before moving onto the next unrelated (or related) thought.

Law #3 if other people are still on the zoom call, it's because they have something to say

Law #4:  most of what you say can, and should, be said in fewer than 10 seconds.

  • Refer to laws 1, 2 and 3
  • minimize time spent thanking the speakers, moderators or anyone else
  • Try not to restate the obvious.  We all know how important and monumental today's conference is.
